Google has offered up its wonderful mapping site with moon images as celebration of the anniversary of the first manned moon landing. The detail on the shots are wonderful.

Roberts Round-up

Filed under: Politics - Nemo @ 2:56 pm

Let’s see if I’ve got this correct:

the Left thinks that Judge John Roberts is too conservative since (while the government was his client), he signed a brief against Roe v. Wade,

the Right thinks he doesn’t have enough conservative credentials so he may be another Souter,

he’s apparently considered to be very much like Rehnquist - a conservative who leans moderate - rather than O’Connor’s moderate leaning conservative or Scalia’s hard conservatism,

and finally, O’Connor herself is calling him a “first rate” choice.

Frankly, while the small track record gives me pause, the overall picture is very, very good. The extremes don’t like him, he is well-qualified, well-liked and holds a conservative judicial philosophy that isn’t overwhelming. Seems like a great pick to me.

James Doohan Dead at 85

Scotty of ‘Star Trek’ Dead at 85

There are lots of obvious tributes/jokes like “Scotty beamed up” or “the engines couldna take any more”, however, I think I’ll pass on any more than that. Scotty was always a neat character - at least until the latter movies turned him into more of a buffoon than an engineer.

I think some of that fueled the resentment he felt towards William Shatner. Shatner reportedly tried to grill him about it at their last public appearance together, but Doohan could barely speak at the time - so Shatner came off as pretty idiotic by all accounts I read.

I met Doohan at one convention. He was gracious enough towards everyone (and a bit of a girl chaser) and had a great sense of humor.

Star Trek has past its prime the last few years, but I grew up on it, and Scotty was always a favorite of mine. He will be missed.

May he rest in peace.
