Why Rovegate is Irrelevant
I have followed the Rove leak story and find it sadly fascinating. Those on the extreme Right continue to hold Rove up as a near-Saint (”He didn’t break the letter of the law”), and those on the exterme Left represent him as a near-Demon (”See, this further proves Bush is corrupt!”). Meanwhile, everyone else is yawning.
Valarie Plame was not on any assignment, nor was she a “covert operative” like James Bond. National security was not compromised when she was “outed”. She was an analyst like many of the thousands of people who work at Langley. It’s hard for people to get worked up over someone’s desk job in Virginia being made public.
What we have is part of the continuing cycle of “gotcha politics”. The Right tries to score points on the Left, and vice versa. I just wish they would get the whole thing over with so we can go back to real political matters: like trying to see if bloggers can be regulated.
